Supporting the Asian community through storytelling and donations

News Break’s #StopAsianHate content campaign

Shortly after the tragic shootings in Georgia, News Break decided it wanted to do more to support Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. Our goal has always been to bring people together and help them connect with their local communities. It pained us to see this hatred and violence, so we launched the #StopAsianHate content campaign on News Break. We asked creators to contribute impactful, local stories to help uplift AAPI voices and we were truly moved by the response. There were no monetary awards for participating. Instead, featured writers had the opportunity to choose an AAPI organization and News Break would donate $1,000 to each nonprofit.

We received dozens of stories about communities and individuals working together to #StopAsianHate. Some stories also touched on how these issues directly relate to creators and their families. Thank you to all the creators who participated in the #StopAsianHate content campaign. It was an honor to be able to share all of these stories with our millions of readers. Here’s a list of our featured story selection:

Thanks to our five selected creators, News Break donated $5,000 to AAPI nonprofits. We hoped that through these donations we would be able to help organizations making a direct impact on AAPI communities, but what we learned was that many of these nonprofits had already impacted our creators’ lives as well. Heather Jauquet shared that as a half-Filipina Marylander, she wanted to support the Philippine American Foundation for Charities, which helps Filipinos and Filipino Americans in Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Karin Jensen shared, “My Mom was a Chinese immigrant’s daughter, and my aunts all benefited from the Ming Quong Home. Although the Ming Quong Home no longer exists, its sister charity, the Donaldina Cameron House, is still doing good work in San Francisco and is an affiliate of the Asian Pacific Fund.” Through her request, News Break donated to the Asian Pacific Fund. We also donated to Asian American Advancing Justice and National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum.

We realize this is just a small step towards building a more equitable and loving society, and we plan to continue to share diverse stories. There is no room for racism of any kind and we stand in solidarity and support with those communities experiencing hatred and violence.
